Cleveland's School Counseling Department offers comprehensive support services to all members of the school’s community. The program is designed to support, alongside with family members, school staff, and school community members, the academic, social, personal, and career growth of all students.

Cleveland's School Counseling Department philosophy is for all students to know they are loved, they are valued, and they have individual interests and abilities, thus helping them to reach their full potential as productive members of society.

Students are encouraged to visit the counselor if they need help with a problem or to share happy experiences. The counselor conducts individual and group counseling sessions with students in areas of need. The school counselor offers individual support to students for brief solution-focused counseling. When more in depth counseling support seems appropriate, the school counselor can offer referrals to community-based counseling services. Group counseling sessions are held for students experiencing similar problems such as anger management, self-confidence, study skill/organization, friendship, and family changes. Group counseling requires parental permission.

School Counseling Programs

Amigos: Fayette County High School students meet with our Spanish-speaking students to provide tutorial services in English, and help with reading and math assignments. This program meets on Friday mornings from 7:40-8:15. Not currently available due to Covid-19 and visitor restrictions.

New Kids on the Block: The counselor will meet with students who recently moved to Cleveland. The counselors and the students discuss the "highs and lows" of being a new student. 

Padres and Compadres: This program is for our Spanish-speaking families. We meet three times a year at Grace Evangelical Church for dinner and an academic workshop. Childcare is provided.

Rainbow Support Groups: The Rainbows Support Group is a grief support group that is available for children who have experienced loss such as separation or divorce, death in the family, or incarcerated family member. Rainbow group sessions will be held throughout the year. Parent permission is required.

Small Groups: Small groups are offered to students who may need support in various areas of skill development. The small groups include social/friendship, study skills, self-management, as well as other groups that may be determined as necessary to support students’ needs. Groups meet once a week during a 6 to 8 week period. Parent permission is required.

Career Clusters

The Georgia Department of Education has identified 17 career clusters. Students will participate in career guidance lessons to learn more about the career clusters.

5TH GRADE CAREER PORTFOLIOS

The State of Georgia requires all 5th grade public school students to complete a Career Portfolio. This portfolio encourages students to begin researching potential career choices. Students will work with the school counselor and their teachers to complete career inventories, and research job descriptions, work environments, education requirements, salary, and the job outlook. Students will complete a state required essay and presentation. More information will be sent home with the student throughout the year.

School Counseling Lessons

School counseling lessons are provided for all students based on standards from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success. The 35 mindset and behavior standards identify and prioritize the specific attitudes, knowledge and skills students should be able to demonstrate as a result of a school counseling program. School counselors use the standards to assess student growth and development, guide the development of strategies and activities, and create a program that helps students achieve their highest potential.

School counseling lessons may include making responsible choices, relationship development, academic roles and responsibilities, time management, child safety, career awareness, learning styles, stress management, active listening, building self- confidence, self-management, test-taking skills, etc. School counseling lessons are offered once a month for each classroom.
