After School Program

Department Staff:

Director:  Julia Simpson

"Enhance Students' Lives Within a Safe, Fun and Nurturing Environment with a Commitment to Excellence
Through Continued Improvement"

 About the Program

The
After School Program is an affordable, safe option that engages children in a wide variety of fun and creative activities such as arts and crafts, fun games, creative cooking, supervised outdoor/gym play, homework assistance, computer enrichment, drama/juggling and club participation.

ASP has been in operation since 1987 under the auspice of the superintendent of the Fayette County Board of Education and the guidance of various national organizations such as the National Afterschool Association, National Association of Elementary School Principals and the Georgia School-Age Care Alliance.

ASP has grown from its inception in 1987 of 250 students serving nine elementary schools to over 1,390 students today serving 17 elementary schools.

ASP is not only a great alternative to daycare, but it also gives parents peace of mind. It is a safer option than entering a home alone, and has been shown to reduce opportunities for latchkey kids to engage in criminal, delinquent or inappropriate behaviors or become victimized by predators. It has also been shown to improve achievement and promote a better attitude toward school.

-- Miller and Marx, 1990 in Supplement of the National Assessment of Chapter 1.

Mission / Purpose / Philosophy / Strategic Direction

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to enhance students’ lives within a safe, fun and nurturing environment with a commitment to excellence through continued improvement

PURPOSE

The Fayette County After School Program’s purpose is to provide children with quality after school supervision in a safe environment by enriching their lives through creative play, exploration and hands-on learning activities while enhancing their quality of life in partnership with their families, their school, and their community.  The intent is to provide a safe, relaxed, and stimulating environment for children who are able to meaningfully participate in a variety of planned activities between the end of school each day up to 6:30 pm.

PHILOSOPHY

The Fayette County After School Program’s philosophy contends that activities of children during out-of-school-time can be as important to their growth and development as the time they spend in the classroom. During these non-school hours, children who are able to meaningfully participate have opportunities to choose from a variety of enriching activities, allowing them to explore new fields of interest while engaging in hands-on activities and discovery play.  These activities are designed to support and expand the physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills experienced in school.

STRATEGIC DIRECTION

  1. Provide out-of-school-time programs that exceed National Standards of Quality (NSQ).

  2. Bridge communications between the Fayette County After School Program, its students and their families, the school system and our community.

  3. Develop out-of-school time activities that reflect Fayette County School System’s programs and enable students to function successfully.

  4. Select/maintain a quality work force.

  5. Provide a quality environment.

  6. Improve communications and administrative operations using the latest information technology.

  7. Obtain necessary funding to provide quality out-of-school-time programs.
