Board Recap

 

The Fayette County Board of Education met in regular session on February 24, 2003 in the boardroom of the Fayette County Board of Education. The following actions were taken:

 

1.        Approved agenda

 

2.        Invocation - Reverend Dennis Watson, Pastor of Harps Crossing Baptist Church

 

3.        Pledge of Allegiance - Morgan and Zachery Randolph (1st grade and 5th grade) Kedron Elementary

 

4.        Recognition: outstanding students and employees were recognized.

 

5.        Comptroller Jim Stephens reported that the monthly finances are in order.

 

6.        Personnel items were approved as presented including the hiring of Charles McCreary as head football coach/teacher for Whitewater High School and the reclassification of Erin Roberson, a teacher at Fayetteville Intermediate School to assistant principal at Peeples Elementary. She replaces Doe Evans.

 

7.        There were no comments from the public.

 

8.        Consent agenda was approved as presented.

 

9.        Items Requiring Action by Board: approved tentative staff allotments for 2003-2004 as presented.

 

10.     Superintendent's Reports

 

  1. Language Arts Adoption (Spelling and Grammar): Reading Coordinator Debbie Wheat presented the textbooks which are on display in the boardroom of the Fayette County Board of Education for review. The books will be available for 30 days for public review. Citizens can also fill out evaluation forms to give their feedback on the proposed books.
  1. Comptroller Jim Stephens gave a budget update regarding cuts in state revenues and collection of local taxes.
  1. The following construction update was presented by Construction Manager Klaus Darnall:

 

Cleveland Elementary:

We have a meeting scheduled Friday, Feb. 21 with the contractor on a couple of warranty items. The contractor has submitted closeout documents to the architect.

Sara Harp Minter Elementary:

We have had a couple of meetings with the contractor on completing the punch-list items. There are a couple of major items to be taken care of. The contractor has the closeout documents to send to the architect.

Whitewater High School:

The concrete slab has been poured in approximately 75 % of the math, English, social studies, science and business classrooms. Approx. 50% of the cafeteria/commons area concrete slab has been poured. Structural steel columns, beams and bar joists have been erected in the art and auto service lab and in approx. 50% of the math, English and social studies classroom area. Concrete masonry wall construction has begun in the classroom area. Stadium grading is on going and below grade drainage is being installed. This has been hampered by rainy weather.

Crabapple Lane Elementary School:

The concrete slab has been poured in the classroom, administration, media, cafeteria and kitchen area. Structural steel has been erected in the administrative area, media, kitchen, cafeteria and classroom areas. Concrete masonry unit walls have been constructed in approx. 95% of all classroom areas and are beginning to be constructed in the administration area. The standing seam metal roof has been installed over the back 8 classrooms (E wing) and has been installed over approx. 1/3 of the "D" wing. Brick installation is 2/3 complete in the courtyard area and is on going in the gym area and the end wall of "D" wing.

East Fayette Elementary School:

Had a pre-construction meeting with the general contractor. The contractor has placed his portable office at the site. Work will begin Monday February 25, 2003.

Fayetteville Intermediate School:

Had a pre-construction meeting with the general contractor. The contractor has placed his portable office at the site. Work will begin Monday February 25, 2003.

McIntosh High School:

The architect is working on the construction documents. We have to meet with the McIntosh

chorus and band staff to determine modification of the existing band and black-box theater spaces.

Sandy Creek High School:

The architect is working on the construction documents.
