BOARD RECAP

 

The Fayette County Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, February 23, 2004 in the boardroom of the Fayette County Board of Education.  The following actions were taken:

 

1.                  Approved agenda

2.                  Invocation

3.                  Pledge of Allegiance - Kie Fujii - 5th grade student at Oak Grove Elementary School

4.                  Comptroller James Stephens reported that the monthly finances were in order

5.                  Recognitions

a.                   Recognized outstanding employees including Michael Howell - selected as the Distinguished Principal of  the 6th District by the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals

b.                  Recognized Robert J. Burch Elementary and North Fayette Elementary as 2004 Title I Distinguished Schools

6.                  Appearance:

Ms. Kim Carawan, Peachtree Dive Center - concerning plans to build an Aquatics Center on Jenkins Road across from Sandy Creek High School.  Breaking ground for the center is scheduled within the next 90 days.  The 25-meter pool will be available for use by school swim teams.

7.                  Presentation of Certificates - School Board Member Appreciation Week March 8-12, 2004

8.                  Personnel items were approved as presented

9.                  There were no comments from the public

10.              Approved consent agenda

11.              Items requiring action by the Board:

a.                   Approved Tentative Staff Allotments for 2004-2005

b.                  Approved resolution requesting Maximum Class Size Requirements for 2003-2004 be continued for 2004-2005.  Our Resolution will be sent to the House and Senate Education Committee in conjunction with resolutions from other boards.

c.                   Approved bid for metal lockers for Whitewater High School

d.                  Approved resolution to declare surplus and to sell 40.92 acres of property located on Lester Road

12.              Superintendent's Reports

a.                   Consortium for Adequate School funding in Georgia - Dr. DeCotis presented a recommendation to wait on funding outcomes before making a decision about joining the consortium.

b.                  Proposed Model & Guidance Counseling Plan - Faith Hardnett, Sonya Tucker and Michael Roache presented the county's first comprehensive plan

 

 

 

c.         Update on construction

Whitewater High School

The heat-pump loop lines have been flushed and heat will be turned on in the classroom areas in the next few days.  Brick walls are being constructed in the PE area.  The elevator in the PE area is being installed.  The auditorium ceiling is 95% complete.  Ductwork is being installed in the auditorium lobby.  The metal panels for the high roof areas have arrived and installation of the metal panels has begun in the gymnasium area.

McIntosh High School

The concrete slab for the new PE facility has been poured.  The concrete foundation walls for the new PE facility have been back-filled and compacted.  The below slab sanitary sewer plumbing lines have been installed on the lower level of the new PE facility.

Sandy Creek High School

The school, for a couple of weeks, has occupied the chorus and drama modified classrooms. The contractor has been working on “punch-list” items in the drama, chorus and new restrooms during winter break and completing the new above ceiling coiling gate near the administration area.  The structural steel is being erected in the new auditorium and lobby. Gravel has been placed for the auditorium lobby slab area.  The staff parking lot is still too wet to gravel and pave.
