Construction Advisory Committee Meeting

June 5, 2006

Committee Members met in the Fayette County Board of Education Central Office #2 Conference Room.  Dr. John DeCotis, Superintendent, and Mr. Fred Phillips, Purchasing Agent, thanked everyone for coming to the meeting.

Mr. Klaus Darnall, Construction Manager, and Mr. Phillips reported on most recent FY2001 Bond updates at McIntosh High School.  The old automotive program space is being reconfigured to house the construction class, and the old construction classroom will house the new health occupations program.  These are the last funds for the FY 2001 Bond monies.

Mr. Darnall and Mr. Phillips reported on the FY2005 bond construction projects.  Bennett’s Mill Middle School is progressing.  The concrete slabs have been poured; the steel for the structures of the kitchen and mechanical room installed; and cinder block in the kitchen and media center is up.  The outside brick work is being placed in the back of the building.  As to date, there have been no complications with the construction, and the school is still on target to open for August 1, 2007.

With Rising Starr Middle School, the addition is progressing well with the exception of the exterior brickwork on the building.  The school is still expecting a shipment from the company supplying the brick, and will move forward when received.  Brick work on two of the wings is complete; and the HVAC is installed in two of the wings, with the third wing about finished with the HVAC.  The estimated completion date for this project is August 1, 2006.

The Peeples Elementary School and Spring Hill Elementary additions are progressing.  For Peeples Elementary School, the contractor has 99% of the exterior brick work complete.  This addition is very much on target for the scheduled completion date of August 1, 2006.  The Spring Hill addition has made good progress.  The roof has been placed on the addition, and windows are soon to be installed.  Floor tiles are being placed in the new classrooms, and the estimated completion date is August 1, 2006.

For Flat Rock and Whitewater Middle Schools, the work has begun for the gymnasium air conditioning projects.  Work is scheduled to be completed by August 1, 2006.

At J. C. Booth Middle School, work has begun on the new kitchen equipment updates, as well as the replacement of the ceiling tiles in the classrooms.  New marker boards are also being installed, and these updates are expected to be finished by August 1, 2006.

For East Fayette Elementary School, work has begun on the installation of an energy management system, replacement of the roof HVAC units, and air conditioning of the gymnasium.  This work is expected to be completed for the beginning of school in August, 2006.

For McIntosh High School, the work on the energy management system, replacement of roof-top HVAC units; replacement of ceiling tile and grid, installation of marker boards, and modifications to construct a Health Occupations have begun.

At Brooks Elementary School, the preliminary drawings and plans for the school updates are almost complete, and will be submitted to the Georgia Department of Education within a few days.   The additions will be for eight classrooms; and as well, the updates will include air conditioning of the kitchen, renovation of the media/auxiliary spaces, and the replacement of the gymnasium roof and roof top HVAC units.  This project is expected to be completed in 2007.  As well, the bus loop is being looked at, in order to accommodate this addition onto the back of the building.

The Fayette Middle School’s projects are equally progressing.  The planned renovations have been approved by the Georgia Department of Education, and openings in the walls have been made to begin on the expansion of the cafeteria into the old band room.  The replacement of the roof top HVAC units will begin next summer.  The project is expected to be completed in June, 2007.

Mr. Mike Satterfield, Director of Facilities Services, informed the Committee of the various other projects that bond money would pay for this summer.  As part of the School System’s “ten year maintenance plan”, Starr’s Mill High School and Rising Starr Middle School will be repainted, and floor tiles will be installed, replacing carpet.  As well, four of the elementary schools’ common areas are scheduled to be repainted.  Rising Starr Middle School is also being reconfigured to accommodate nautilus equipment that the school received through a grant.

Mr. Satterfield spoke of other minor projects going on in the schools this summer.  Peachtree City Elementary is reconfiguring two small classrooms into one larger one, in order to accommodate another Second Grade classroom.  Sandy Creek High School’s bleachers (in the gym) are being replaced to make them ADA Compliant; the 8-lane track is being refurbished with a rubberized surface, and lights will be replaced on the softball field.  At Fayette County High School, the poles and lights will be replaced in Tiger Stadium, for safety purposes.  Whitewater High School additions will include a concession stand and press stand box.  Mr. Satterfield also informed the Committee of the changes being made at the LaFayette Educational Center to accommodate the new “Welcome Center” at the end of the year.  This will be a one-stop center for new students, and will also encompass the Records Center.

Mr. Lee Davis, Comptroller, confirmed to the Committee that the second part of our bond issue would be sold at approximately July, 2007.

The meeting was adjourned.  Dr. DeCotis thanked everyone for coming and stated that he hoped they enjoyed the meeting.
