Committee Meeting
August 13, 2007
Committee members met at the Central Office of the Fayette Board of Education,
at 7:00 p.m. on August 13, 2007. Mr.
Mike Satterfield, Director of Facilities Services/Committee Chairman and Dr.
John DeCotis, Superintendent, welcomed the members to the meeting. After short introductions from everyone, Dr.
DeCotis introduced Mrs. Laura Brock, Acting Comptroller, and Mrs. Terri
Gerhardt, Purchasing Agent.
Mr. Klaus Darnall, Construction Manager, updated the Committee on the
FY 2005 Bond Building Program. Bennett Mill Middle School
opened its doors to students for the first time today; staff moved into the
building approximately one month ago after receiving the Occupancy Permit.
The Committee was informed that the Brooks Elementary
School addition has been completed, as well as
the new roof top HVAC units installed.
One of the Committee members complimented Mr. Darnell on the project,
and stated that it looked cleaner, brighter and like new.
Fayette Middle Schools kitchen
renovation has been completed, as well as the roof top HVAC units
installed. Mr. Darnell mentioned that
the units had a slight problem, but they should be repaired within the next
couple of days.
Oak Grove Elementary Schools kitchen
renovation is coming along ahead of schedule, with the exterior block wall to
40% completion, and electrical duct work and the slab being worked on. The new roof top HVAC units have a leak in
the refrigerant lines and will be repaired soon, as well.
Mr. Darnell further spoke on the progress of the
new elementary school #1, Inman
Elementary School. Concrete for the back wing has been poured,
and the curves for the bus drives, parking lot and parent pickup drive have
been completed. The gravel base for the
school is complete, and 85% of the sewer lines are complete. Concrete for the first grade wing will be
poured later this week, and the steel for the structure will be arriving
soon. This is our seventh prototype
elementary school, and has been a beautiful site to build on.

Satterfield next talked about the Facilities Update projects that have occurred

The
Committee next discussed the proposed elementary school site at the corner of Sandy Creek Road
and Tillman Road. Dr. DeCotis informed the Committee that the
Board of Education will be voting on the timeline starting the construction of
the new school at their August 20, 2007, Board Meeting. At this time, Board Members will decide on
opening the school in Fall, 2009, or at a later
date. He also informed the Committee
that C.W. Campbell and Sandra Watson were taking class room inventories at
schools to see what free space is available.
The Committee was also informed of the ongoing process of the Boundaries
Committee. Boundaries for the 2008-2009
school year (for elementary schools) are expected to
be voted on in the fall of this year.
All of the Committee members were invited to attend a Boundaries
meeting, to be held on August 16, 2007, at 7:00 p.m.
Dr.
DeCotis presented advantages and disadvantages in delaying the start of the new
school. Each advantage and disadvantage
was discussed in detail. Committee
members had many good suggestions, and when asked about their opinions, overall
felt that the Board of Education should move forward with the planned new
school opening in Fall, 2009, mainly because delay of
the project would increase the project cost, due to inflation in construction
and material prices.
If the Board of Education decides to go ahead and build this elementary
school, the plan for the Fayette
County prototype elementary
school will be utilized, and will initially hold 675 students.
The meeting was adjourned. Dr.
DeCotis thanked everyone for coming and stated that he hoped they enjoyed the
meeting.
