Fourth Grade Content Summaries
Language
Arts & Reading - Georgia Performance Standards

Fourth graders expand and deepen their knowledge of reading, writing, and
speaking as they grow in independence. They can now understand and learn
from texts without having the teacher preview the material for them.
Students now use many metacognitive strategies to deepen and expand their
understanding of material. Fourth graders use writing as a tool for
learning. They write daily and use reading and writing strategies
interchangeably. They are ready for opportunities to discuss books. They
use appropriate conversational skills in both student-to-student and
student-to teacher interactions. They are able to participate in a
cooperative learning environment and are ready for more complex assignments
that require oral and written presentations.
Math - Quality Core Curriculum -

By
the end of grade four, students will apply computation strategies to
add/subtract, use estimation strategies to predict computation results, use
the properties of multiplication and identify factors and multiples of a
given number, and solve problems involving division and recall of division
facts. They will identify such terms as point, ray, line, line segment,
and angle, determine geometric relationships, make models of geometric
figures, and use ordered pairs of numbers to locate points on a grid.
Students will determine a pair of numbers or the missing element of a pair
when given a relation or rule and will determine the rule or relation when
given a pair of numbers. They will explore the concepts of “mean” and
“median” and they will collect, read, interpret, and organize data into
charts, tables, and graphs. Students will determine the probability of a
given event through manipulatives. They will solve one and two-step word
problems related to fourth grade objectives.
Science – Georgia Performance Standards
Fourth grade students will gather and interpret data, make models, and use
records, tables, or graphs to identify patterns of change. At the end of
fourth grade students will be able to compare and contrast the physical
attributes of stars and planets and model the relative position of the earth
in the solar system. Students will understand the importance of the water
cycle, analyze weather maps, and collect data to predict weather events and
infer weather patterns. Using tools and materials students will investigate
the nature of light, sound, and the relationship between force and motion of
an object. Students will follow the flow of energy within an ecosystem and
identify factors that affect the survival or extinction of organisms.
Social Studies: The Early Development of the United
States –
Quality Core Curriculum -www.glc.k12.ga.us/qcc/homepg.asp
The major focus of fourth grade is an investigation of the geographic,
historical, economic, civic, and cultural development of the early United
States. A historical chronology of the growth of America will serve as the
organizing theme of this study. Units include Native Americans and the
influence of exploration, Colonial Era, Revolutionary War, emergence of the
new nation and government, Westward Expansion, Industrial Revolution,
issues dividing the nation and the Civil War. Rights and responsibilities of
citizens will be emphasized. Skills include making inferences from maps and
determining which map is used for a specific purpose.
Health
The fourth grade health curriculum is organized around eight major strands
of study. These strands include: alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; disease
prevention; family living, human growth and development; mental health;
nutrition, personal health, and safety. |
