  Third Grade Content Summaries

Language Arts & Reading - Georgia Performance Standards - www.georgiastardards.org

In third grade, students read more widely on a variety of topics and increase their ability to read aloud with fluency and comprehension.  They enjoy a variety of genres and extract deeper meaning from more complex texts.  Third graders are now able to work independently on research projects.  They use all aspects of the writing process in producing compositions and reports. By the end of third grade, students recognize the importance of language conventions and correct spelling in effective communication.  They show evidence of expanding language with increased vocabulary and a wider range of language structures.  They exhibit flexibility in their ability to vary language patterns in both speaking and writing..

Math - Quality Core Curriculum - www.glc.k12.ga.us/qcc/homepg.aspp

By the end of grade three, students will identify place values of hundreds and thousands, round two and three digit numbers to the nearest ten and hundred, identify, compare and write fractions.  They will multiply whole numbers up to three-digit by one-digit numbers and the will determine division facts through 9’s and recall multiplication facts to 9 x 9.  Students will select appropriate units of measure, estimate measurements, and measure accurately and they tell time to the minute and they measure elapsed time.  They will determine the probability of an event and they will organize information into charts and tables.  Students will identify information needed to solve problems and select appropriate math operations to solve one and two-step word problems using problem-solving strategies.
(For more information, go to www.glc.k12.ga.us/qcc/homepg.asp).

Science – Georgia Performance Standards

Third grade students will use inquiry skills to focus on questions about the world around them and begin to record and analyze data accurately in order to answer their own questions.  By the end of third grade students will be able to investigate magnetic forces, how heat is produced and the effects of heating and cooling, and transfer of heat energy.  Students will explore relationships between form, function, and the shape of an object to explain fossils as evidence of organisms that lived long ago, physical attributes of rocks and minerals, and features of plants and animal.  Students will also differentiate between habitats in Georgia and the organisms that live in our state.

Social Studies: Communities – Quality Core Curriculum - www.glc.k12.ga.us/qcc/homepg.asp

The focus of third grade is to study communities - rural, urban, suburban, mountain, desert and coastal. The origin and development of Fayette County, as a local community, is a major component of this study. Organizing themes include geography, economic development, technological changes, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Skills include using cardinal and intermediate directions, major lines of latitude and longitude, and using the appropriate map for a specific purpose.

Health

The third grade health curriculum is organized around eight major strands of study.  These strands include: alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; disease prevention; family living, human growth and development; mental health; nutrition, personal health, and safety.
