Language
Arts & Reading - Georgia Performance Standards -

In
third grade, students read more widely on a variety of topics and increase
their ability to read aloud with fluency and comprehension. They enjoy a
variety of genres and extract deeper meaning from more complex texts. Third
graders are now able to work independently on research projects. They use
all aspects of the writing process in producing compositions and reports. By
the end of third grade, students recognize the importance of language
conventions and correct spelling in effective communication. They show
evidence of expanding language with increased vocabulary and a wider range
of language structures. They exhibit flexibility in their ability to vary
language patterns in both speaking and writing..
Math

By
the end of grade three, students will identify place values of hundreds and
thousands, round two and three digit numbers to the nearest ten and hundred,
identify, compare and write fractions. They will multiply whole numbers up
to three-digit by one-digit numbers and the will determine division facts
through 9’s and recall multiplication facts to 9 x 9. Students will select
appropriate units of measure, estimate measurements, and measure accurately
and they tell time to the minute and they measure elapsed time. They will
determine the probability of an event and they will organize information
into charts and tables. Students will identify information needed to solve
problems and select appropriate math operations to solve one and two-step
word problems using problem-solving strategies.

Science – Georgia Performance Standards
Third
grade students will use inquiry skills to focus on questions about the world
around them and begin to record and analyze data accurately in order to
answer their own questions. By the end of third grade students will be able
to investigate magnetic forces, how heat is produced and the effects of
heating and cooling, and transfer of heat energy. Students will explore
relationships between form, function, and the shape of an object to explain
fossils as evidence of organisms that lived long ago, physical attributes of
rocks and minerals, and features of plants and animal. Students will also
differentiate between habitats in Georgia and the organisms that live in our
state.
Social Studies: Communities – Quality Core Curriculum

The focus of third grade is to study communities - rural, urban, suburban,
mountain, desert and coastal. The origin and development of Fayette County,
as a local community, is a major component of this study. Organizing themes
include geography, economic development, technological changes, and the
rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Skills include using cardinal
and intermediate directions, major lines of latitude and longitude, and
using the appropriate map for a specific purpose.
Health
The
third grade health curriculum is organized around eight major strands of
study. These strands include: alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; disease
prevention; family living, human growth and development; mental health;
nutrition, personal health, and safety. |
