Counseling Program

  • The School Guidance and Counseling Program offers comprehensive support services to all members of the school community. The program is designed to work in conjunction with the family members, school staff, and members of the school community to support the academic, social, personal, and career growth of all students.

The program offers classroom guidance lessons that focus on topics designed for raising awareness, developing an understanding of self and others, and developing the life skills that are necessary to promote growth in self-discipline, initiative, independence and responsible decision-making for success in the present, as well as the future. The topics  include making responsible choices, relationship development, academic roles and responsibilities, time management, child safety, standing up to bullying behavior, career awareness, learning styles, stress management, active listening, building self- confidence, self-management, test taking skills, etc. Classroom guidance lessons are offered once monthly for each classroom.

Small groups are offered to students who may need support in various areas of skill development and to help cope with difficult challenges in their personal and/or social experiences that interfere with their ability to focus on their academic experiences. The small groups include social/friendship skills, study skills, self-management, as well as other groups that may be determined as necessary to support student needs. The groups meet once weekly, when possible.  Parent permission is required.

The Rainbows Support Group is a grief support group that is available for children who have experienced loss such as separation or divorce, death in the family, or an incarcerated family member. The group meets once weekly for twelve weeks. Parent permission is required.

The School Guidance and Counseling Program offers individual support to students for brief solution-focused guidance. When more in depth counseling support seems appropriate, the school counselor can offer referrals to community-based counseling services.
