No Child Left Behind ActOn January 8, 2002, President Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 that reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). NCLB significantly raises expectations for states, local school districts and schools in that all students will meet or exceed state standards in reading and mathematics within twelve years.
NCLB requires all states, including the State of Georgia, to establish state academic standards and a state testing system that meet federal requirements. Georgia received final approval of its state accountability plan from the US Department of Education on May 19, 2003, and revisions to the plan were approved by the federal government on June 7, 2004.
