What is Youth Apprenticeship?

Youth Apprenticeship was initiated in Georgia to insure a well educated and highly skilled workforce. It is designed to bring together the components necessary for a successful career: education and experience.

Key Components:

  • School-based learning

  • Work-based learning

  • Connecting activities

Using these components, students begin to prepare for a career while still in high school.

Youth Apprenticeship:

  • Provides paid work experience

  • Promotes partnership between education and industry

  • Integrates academic and technical instruction

  • Provides post-secondary options

How does Youth Apprenticeship work?

Youth Apprenticeship provides an opportunity for juniors and seniors to start preparing for a career while still in high school. Individual programs of study in the freshman and sophomore years prepare students for a successful apprenticeship.

Youth Apprenticeship consists of:

  • A sequence of courses that develops each student’s academic and occupational competencies

  • On-the-job learning guided by a skilled work-based mentor

  • Skill development based on competency standards developed by industry and labor

How will Youth Apprenticeship benefits students?

Youth Apprenticeship offers students school-based and work-based learning opportunities that are related to the student’s career interest area.

Through Youth Apprenticeship, students are able to:

  • Earn wages while learning from skilled professionals

  • Increase career options and future employability

  • Strengthen academic skills

  • Experience the connection between education and real-life work skills

  • Experience potential careers in the workplace

How will Youth Apprenticeship benefit employers?

Youth Apprenticeship enables employers to play an active role in shaping the quality of their future workforce.

Through Youth Apprenticeship, employers are able to:

  • Increase skill levels of potential workers

  • Work with educators to develop curriculum based on industry standards

  • Recruit and screen potential employees

  • Reduce turnover of entry-level employees through the hiring of Youth Apprenticeship graduates

  • Improve competitiveness in the international marketplace

How can I become involved with Youth Apprenticeship?

If you are interested in Youth Apprenticeship for your student or would like to become an industry sponsor, please see your high school counselor or contact Kendra Hipps.
