Philosophy of the Fayette County Pre-K Program

The philosophy of the Fayette County Pre-Kindergarten Program is that each child will be successful in a developmentally appropriate environment, which allows each child to attain his/her maximum potential.

Based on our philosophy, the following goals have been written to insure that each child is given an equal opportunity to reach his/her potential:
  • to establish a language-rich environment
  • to provide hands-on experiences that develop process skills
  • to instill a love of learning
  • to enhance the development of a positive self-concept
  • to maintain a positive classroom environment that fosters social and emotional growth
 Transition from Preschool to Kindergarten

The children have the benefit of attending preschool in an elementary school. This plays a large factor in the success of transition because students know the school procedures, routines and behavioral expectations. By kindergarten, the students will have attended all specials, which include music, art, media, technology and physical education. Students have the opportunity to eat in the school cafeteria and will have had the experience of riding on a bus. Students will have socialized at recess and will be familiar with the playground.

In addition, the teachers will assist parents in completing the necessary paperwork for kindergarten registration and the required forms. During the spring, the children are reevaluated if needed and a developmental checklist is completed to give to the receiving teacher. Peer mentors from previous preschool years tutor in the classrooms. The preschoolers also visit kindergarten classes to prepare them for the following year. Kindergarten shadowing has proven to be very helpful for the students.

The preschool teachers help the school administration complete class assignments based on the needs of the student. Social stories are written for individual students to read over the summer to help prepare them for the transition. Packets are provided to the parents based on the developmental domains and kindergarten readiness to help bridge the gap over the summer.
