Eagle Scout Reopens
Nature Trail
March
13, 2007
After being closed to students for two
years, the Big Foot Nature Trail at Hood
Avenue Primary is ready for young explorers
to learn about nature.
For years, students had enjoyed walking and
learning along the trail that is in the back
of the school but that all came to an end
when damaging winds from hurricane Katrina
knocked down trees and scattered debris,
making and the trail too dangerous to use.
Now the trail is back and better than ever
thanks to the hard work of Eagle Scout Kyle
Kubit. In addition to cleaning up the trail,
Kyle enlarged the path making it easier for
classes to walk and view the sights. He
added birdhouses, birdfeeders and toad
houses, and, for the first time, an official
entrance marks the beginning of the trail.
Classes will use the trail to study plants
and animals that correlate to units they are
studying.
A dedication ceremony was held at the
entrance of the trail on March 12. Kyle was
in attendance to officially open the trail
with a ribbon cutting ceremony and then he
led the first class through the trail and
conducted a mini-lesson on animals and
habitats.
Kyle earned his Eagle Scout designation for
completion of the project. He is a student
at Fayette County High.
