Students Force Multiple Ties at Math Tournament
March
19, 2007
Tough competition at the 2007 Fayette County
Invitational Math Tournament resulted in some
winners having to wait to get their medals.
Organizers did not anticipate that fierce
competition among students would result in
multiple ties at two placement levels. Junior
Varsity competitors held onto a seven-way tie
for second and a five-way tie for third,
resulting 10 additional medals being awarded.
“I told the audience that this is a good problem
to have,” said Sandy Powers, a math teacher at
Whitewater High who also helped organize the
event.
The tournament, held annually in Fayette, was
developed 21 years ago to give high school
students in the surrounding metro counties an
opportunity to competitively showcase their
mathematical abilities. All five of the county’s
high schools competed and placed in the
tournament. Also participating in this year’s
competition was Eagle’s Landing High in Henry
County and Newnan High in Coweta County.
Additionally, six out of the seven schools
participating won a team trophy. This year’s
team winners are as follows: (Varsity) Sandy
Creek, first; McIntosh, second and Eagles
Landing, third; (Junior Varsity) Whitewater,
first; Fayette County, second and Starr’s Mill,
third.
Individual winners are (Varsity) Michael Qin,
first, McIntosh; Michael Harris, second, Starr’s
Mill and Ashley Ellis, third, Sandy Creek;
(Junior Varsity) Samantha Hollister, first,
Starr’s Mill; (tie for second) Sonika Reddy,
Fayette County; Shawn Yavari, McIntosh; Joseph
Morrow, Starr’s Mill; Chris Walsh, Starr’s Mill;
John Gray, Whitewater; Ehizele Osehobo,
Whitewater and Omoye Osehobo, Whitewater; (tie
for third) Dustin Ingram, Eagle’s Landing; Sonya
Jooma, Fayette County; Michael Keel, Fayette
County; David Wonderley, McIntosh and Zac
Talley, Whitewater.
Whitewater High hosted the tournament on March
12.
