Starr’s Mill Chorus to Sing at National
Cathedral
September 20, 2007
The Starr’s Mill High Choral Department has
been invited to perform at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington,
D.C.
The school’s “Cathedral
Choir” will sing a 25-minute a cappella program on April 6 that will precede
the Sunday Evensong service. The choir will perform works ranging in music
history from the Renaissance to present day. These choral works will include
music by composers such as Hassler, Pitoni, Scarlatti, Gasparini, Bach and
Rachmaninoff.
In addition, a choral
piece has been written especially for the Starr’s Mill chorus to be
premiered at the National Cathedral. The text to this piece, Prayer at
Evensong, was written by St. Louis poet Larry Brown and set to music by
local choral musician and arranger, Mike Dorough.
Choirs from all over the United States
submit audition recordings each year in hope of being selected.
“This is an incredibly prestigious honor
for Starr’s Mill and is a testament to the quality of students who study
choral music here,” says Choral Director Dr. John Odom.
Students from the chorus
will be selling holiday greenery to help defray trip expenses. If you would
like to support the group by purchasing greenery or making a donation to the
group’s trip account, please contact Odom via email at
odom.john@fcboe.org.
