Congratulations to the teams that placed in the top four last weekend at the South Regional Academic Bowl!

Congratulations to the teams that placed in the top four last weekend at the South Regional Academic Bowl at the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton, NC, which included  Starr’s Mill High School students;  Seniors William “Liam” O’Connell, Anna Martin, Ayla Hooper and Junior  Ira Colendrino and  Coaches Cindy Hartpence and Samandra Muniz. This is Starr’s Mills 8th time over the past 12 years that Deaf and Hard of Hearing teacher; Cindy Hartpence has brought a team to the academic bowl competition.

The Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School students was established with the goal of fostering the pursuit of academic excellence, promoting a spirit of academic competition and sportsmanship, and providing social opportunities for the development of collegiality and lifelong friendships.

Every year, Gallaudet University hosts four Regional competitions for up to 80 teams of Deaf and Hard of Hearing high school students. Twenty teams will then advance to the National competition held at Gallaudet every year.

This year Starr’s Mill had an impressive 9 and 1 record qualifying them for the Nationals that take place April 1st through April 4th at the Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. The students will then compete against the 1st through 4th place winners from each of the four regions.

During each region competition there are 20 teams. One student who exemplifies academic excellence throughout the competition is awarded the honor of “Most Outstanding Player” and this was awarded to Starr’s Mill Liam O’Connell.
