November 3, 2016: The world is full of career options, some familiar, and some not so much. School counselors at Whitewater High wanted to expose students to the diversity of career fields available so they organized the school’s first ever career fair.
The fair, which was for juniors and seniors, showcased 75 different career fields. Some of the more unique careers represented included a professional hacker for a security consulting company, a health and safety coordinator from Pinewood Studios, and a nuclear medicine technologist.
“Our goal is for students to have an awareness of the diversity of the world of work, as well as an understanding of the relationship between school performance and future career choices,” says school counselor Lisa Love, who was in charge of coordinating the career fair.
Students were given questionnaires as they entered the fair to guide them in asking questions of the career representatives, and they were encouraged to ask their own questions.
After the fair, the junior students used the information they gathered to complete a writing assignment, and the senior students used their information to complete an assignment in their government or economics class.
Whitewater is the only high school in the county to host a career fair.
