In addition to programming a robot to score points on a themed playing field, teams also had to complete and present a research project outlining a problem they had identified and their solution to fix it. This year’s project theme was “Animal Allies.” Each team had to identify a problem that occurs when people and animals interact.

The Cardinal Crushers tackled the problem of protecting sea turtle eggs from the damage of artificial light by creating a tunnel to put over a sea turtle nest. The tunnel blocks out artificial light and allows the newly hatched sea turtles to follow the light of the moon, hopefully resulting in more babies making it to the ocean. They even wrote a song about it to the rhythm of “We Will Rock You” by the band Queen.

“The judges liked the song so much that the team was asked to perform it in front of the entire auditorium during the awards ceremony,” says Michelle Redahan, one of the robotics team sponsors at the school.

The Cardinal Crushers team members are Madison Lohr, Ian Gevertz, Emmett Fisher, Wynn McDonell, Will McDonell, Roshan Kolachina, Mark Redahan, Trevor Hall, and Marcus Morrow.
