High Schools Nearly Sweep West Georgia’s Math Day


Math teams from two Fayette County high schools took two of the top three honors at the University of West Georgia’s 46th annual Math Day competition, and secured victories at various levels of the competition.High Schools Nearly Sweep West Georgia’s Math Day

Teams from Sandy Creek High and Starr’s Mill High schools placed first and third, respectively, in the team event. Members of the winning teams are (Sandy Creek High) Bryan Nguyen, Brandon Worrell, Delaney Schulten, Isaac Presberg, Phaidra Buchanan, Krista Jackson, Helen Smith, Nathan Eason, Emma Bryan, Kristina Longacre, Abraham Respert, Janna Campbell, Akilah Duncan, Sarah Sorme, Kattalin Gossett, (Starr’s Mill High) Madeleine Childress, Colton Hazelton, Max Hodek, Elizabeth Marmo, Brady Meyer, Ashley Fukuyama, Qiru Lin, Yuri-Grace Ohashi, Gunjan Patel, Carter Rezac, Kyle Robinson, Brock Spence, J.C. Talbott, Joshua Tysor, Yukimi Ueda, Dalton Walraven, and Jay Yao.



Sandy Creek had several individual teams place at different levels of the competition. Placing first in Level 1 Team Problem Solving was Bryan Nguyen, Brandon Worrell, Delaney Schulten, and Isaac Presberg; and placing first in Level 4 Team Problem Solving was Phaidra Buchanan, Krista Jackson, Helen Smith, and Nathan Eason.

Sandy Creek students placed in the top five on the Level 1 math test and the Level 4 math test. The students are (Level 1) Brandon Worrell and Bryan Nguyen, and (Level 4) Helen Smith, Phaidra Buchanan, and Krista Jackson.

Starr’s Mill High had several students take the top three individual honors at on the Level 1, Level 2, and Level 4 math test. They are (Level 1) Jay Yao, first place; Yukimi Ueda, second place; Dalton Walraven, third place; (Level 2) Brock Spence, second place; (Level 4) J.C. Talbott, first place and Joshua Tysor, second place.
