McIntosh High School social studies teacher Whitt Jones is the third teacher selected for the Georgia Geographic Alliance’s “Teacher Feature” spotlight.High School Teacher Featured in Georgia Geographic Alliance Publications

Starting in January 2017, the Georgia Geographic Alliance began giving special recognition to a K-12 educator each month in their newsletter and online. Teachers nominated for the spotlight must integrate place-based learning and geographic education into the classroom creatively and effectively. Jones was the featured teacher for March.

In his classroom, Jones makes it his mission to help mold students into culturally literate, global citizens who recognize the importance of being lifelong learners. Since technology has made it easy for students to instantly get information on names, dates, and places, Jones says his focus has shifted to teaching students important skills such as creative thinking and the application of real-world knowledge.

“I believe human geography is one of the most relevant courses a high school student can take. I want my students to see real world applicability in everything we do in class. Whether they are deciding on the best location to place a factory, or tracing the cultural heritage behind their names, or volunteering at a local organic farm, I want them to see how important human geography is to our lives. It simply helps us make sense of everything else,” Jones explains.

As a Teacher Feature spotlight winner, Jones received an acknowledgement certificate and a gift bag of materials and resources from the Georgia Geographic Alliance and National Geographic
