A team of four students from McIntosh High won the Class AAAAA championship in the 41st annual state mathematics tournament held at Middle Georgia State University at the end of April.
Team members include Sehee Han, Arik Li, David Park, and James Wang. Mathematics teacher Arthur Walton coaches the team.
The competition is by invitation only. Schools receive invitations to participate based on results from math tournaments around the state.
At the state competition, competitors individually complete a 50-question multiple-choice test and a speed round followed by teams working together to complete a set of a dozen challenging problems. The questions come from topics included in the standard high school curriculum up to, and including, calculus and topics not traditionally found in the curriculum such as number theory and combinatorics.
The Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics sponsors the state tournament.
