Keeping Students Safe at the Bus Stop
| |
|
| 1. |
Cooperate with neighbors to
watch students while they are at the bus stop. |
| |
|
| 2. |
Form neighborhood "watch"
groups willing to watch students of specific grade levels while
they wait at their specific stop. |
| |
|
| 3. |
Instruct students to stay
on the side of the roadway and out of the traffic pattern when
waiting for the bus. |
| |
|
| 4. |
Make sure students are
aware of general pedestrian safety. |
| |
|
| 5. |
Students should
not bring "toys" (i.e. roller blades, scooters, bikes, bats, balls etc.) to
the bus stop. |
| |
|
| 6. |
Instruct students not to play games such as tag, chase or other
running games while waiting for the school bus to arrive. |
| |
|
| 7. |
Show students how to
board and exit a school bus correctly, including waiting in a
single file line to board the bus. |
| |
|
| 8. |
Teach students of
all age levels not to talk with strangers and not to accept
rides from strangers or from people they do not know.
Students should know that if their parents expect them to ride
the bus, then they should be on the bus. |

|
More than 13, 134 regular education students and 101 special education
students are transported daily. This number represents 63% of the
school system's total enrollment.
Fleet Information
The school system currently uses 181 buses to transport students even though
state funding is received for only 95. That equals 86 drivers and
buses, plus fuel, parts, wear and tear, and labor to keep the buses
operational, which are funded locally.
The buses are inspected every 20-30 school days.
The Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Safety also inspects the buses
yearly. School Bus Fleet Magazine named Fayette's bus shop in the top
10 bus fleets for 2003. The average bus in the county is 5.7 years
old. |
