Whitewater soccer teams up to ‘Battle for the Cure’

Whitewater High soccer finds inspiration in teaming up to “Battle for the Cure.”

The yearly service project brings the whole Wildcat soccer program together to support a teacher in the district who is battling cancer. This year they teamed up with Inman Elementary’s Erica Morris.

The players’ families donated gift cards to local restaurants and other stores and services to help ease some of the daily burdens and remind her she’s not fighting alone. At the end of their drive, the players presented a flower arrangement and gift cards totaling $1,000, along with a team hoodie.

For head boys coach Scott Schmitt, the initiative is about finding victories beyond the scoreboard. It’s a reminder of gratitude and perspective, encouraging the student-athletes to appreciate their opportunities. It emphasizes leadership and character, offering them a chance to step up off the field and make a positive impact in their community. It also reinforces resilience and mental toughness seeing someone fight through adversity.

“It highlights the importance of teamwork beyond sports. Just like on the field, success comes from showing up for others, working together, and supporting those in need,” said Schmitt. “It shows that being an athlete isn’t just about performance—it’s about heart, service, and standing strong for your community.”
