Department Overview

Fayette County Public Schools began its 1:1 technology initiative in 2017 to enhance digital learning, and has since evolved the program to strike a thoughtful balance between traditional teaching methods and modern technology. 

Currently, all students in grades second through seventh have access to Chromebooks for use during the school day, while students in grades eighth through twelfth participate in a 1:1 take-home Chromebook program. Students in kindergarten and first grade have access to classroom-based Chromebooks to support early learning activities.

Teachers across the district leverage Connected Classroom technology to enhance both instruction and student engagement. Every classroom is equipped with touchscreen panel technology, creating a dynamic and interactive learning environment. To maintain high performance and reliability, Technology Services follows a rolling refresh plan to systematically update aging devices and infrastructure.

As part of its commitment to safety and data protection, Fayette County Public Schools no longer supports the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. Student-owned devices do not meet our security standards, including content filtering and device management, which are enforced on all district-managed Chromebooks. In today’s digital landscape, managing cybersecurity risks is a top priority, and using district-managed devices is a key part of that strategy.

Technology Services ensures district compliance with the requirements of the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) of 2000 and maintains eligibility for E-Rate funding.

Technology Services fully supports the student and staff device program, as well as the Connected Classroom experience, by training school-based technology specialists and teachers in essential troubleshooting skills and equipping district field technicians to provide timely, on-site technical assistance. In addition to device deployment and management, the department ensures that both technical and instructional staff are equipped to maintain seamless classroom technology integration. This includes training on commonly used instructional hardware and software platforms, guidance on effective use of instructional tools, and coordination with curriculum teams to align technology with learning goals. By combining infrastructure support with targeted training, Technology Services ensures that classrooms are not only connected but optimized for student engagement and instructional effectiveness.

The Information Systems team manages key platforms across the district, including the student information system (SIS) and other integrated data systems that support instructional and operational needs. They are also responsible for implementing role-based access controls and overseeing account provisioning to ensure appropriate system access. In addition, the team leads the district’s Data Governance Council, guiding policies and practices around data use and protection. To promote cybersecurity and data privacy, Technology Services provides comprehensive training for all employees through video modules, awareness campaigns, and completion certificates—ensuring staff are equipped to follow best practices in cyber safety and hygiene.

To ensure optimal performance and reliability, the networking team continuously monitors the district’s wired and wireless infrastructure across all schools and departments, analyzing connectivity, bandwidth usage, and potential points of failure. They proactively manage network performance to support instructional technology, administrative operations, and digital learning environments. In addition, the team implements advanced cybersecurity measures—including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and real-time threat monitoring—to defend against cyber threats and protect sensitive student and staff data. These efforts are aligned with district-wide data governance and cybersecurity protocols to maintain a secure and resilient digital ecosystem.
