• We are very excited about STEM/STEAM at Inman Elementary School!  While STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, and STEAM includes A for Arts - it is so much more than just that!  STEM fosters the four Cs - creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.  It encourages children to problem solve with others in small groups and when something fails - try, try again!  Talk about skills our children will need in the future...  Every student in every grade level experiences STEM/STEAM activities with our STEM/STEAM team and within their classrooms and the students keep asking for more!   Check out this PreK - 5th grade September video here to get a feel for what a "STEAM Week" is like at Inman Elementary School.

We started our STEM/STEAM journey in 2014.  After Charlie Harper and Jon Schoening visited a STEM certified school, they worked together with Tess Keller for our first big STEM lesson at Inman as part of a professional development course on STEM.  We had a passion and desire to learn more about STEM as soon as we were introduced!  Our 5th grade students took building gingerbread houses to an entirely new level with community experts and everything.  Check out this gingerbread stem video to learn all about our first real experience!  The STEM team and our students were hooked and wanted more which lead to a great lesson derived from Caine's Arcade in the Spring!

During the 2015-2016 school year, Charlie Harper and Tess Keller expanded our STEM program to every grade level PreK - 5th!  All of the students received at least 3 STEM lessons during the school year with the STEM team and participated in a Project Lead the Way lesson in their classrooms.  You can read more about receiving the PLTW grant below.

With Charlie Harper as a guide leading from the county office during the 16-17, 17-18, and 18-19 school years, Tess Keller and Heidi Brown led four STEM/ STEAM Weeks for each student in every grade level and many classroom teachers brought even more STEM/ STEAM lessons into their classrooms.  One of the most exciting additions to our STEAM program at Inman was the addition of a Monarch Butterfly Garden.  Master Gardener, Jeff Mellin worked with Inman and other Master Gardners in Fayette County to teach this real world lesson and make this a part of our school culture.  Inman is very proud to be a part of this relationship with the extension office.

Tess Keller, Heidi Brown and Laura Crews worked during the summer with the Fayette County STEAM team, and plan to continue infusing our STEM/ STEAM Weeks for every student as well as encourage more STEM/STEAM in the classrooms! We are sooooo excited and so are the kids!  If you would like to volunteer - we would love to have you!  Please be on the lookout for a sign up genius if you can help with supplies or supervision for our future STEAM Dates!

STEM/ STEAM continues to be one of Inman's big ideas and a great focus for the school for the 19-20. 20-21 school years with Tess Keller and Heidi Brown giving any guidance needed to our classroom teachers!  It has been such a success, we are making it even bigger and better allowing students to enrich their STEAM lessons for the entire week in their classrooms too! So exciting!  Be sure to ask your child about their fun and excitement they experience during STEAM Week or during their STEAM lessons in class.

Mrs. Whetstone's Class worked with Mrs. Keller and Mr. Mellin and other Master Gardeners to plant our butterfly garden!

Also, Inman Elementary School has been awarded a $7,500 grant from Project Lead The Way to implement the PLTW Launch program.  This grant was made possible by a generous donation from The Goizueta Foundation, and was written by our school’s STEM Team.  Dr. Robinson, Charlie Harper, Tess Keller, and Jon Schoening  make up our school’s STEM Team, and they are currently working on becoming one of the first elementary schools with a STEM certification in Fayette County.

You can find out more about Project Lead the Way at https://www.pltw.org/   This is an excerpt from their website about the K-5th Launch STEM Program.

Introduce young minds to the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)

Engaging students at a young age builds confidence, grows interest, and puts them on course for strong accomplishments in middle school, high school, and beyond.

Through PLTW Launch, our program for kindergarten through fifth grade, students become problem solvers. Students use structured approaches, like the engineering design process, and employ critical thinking. They apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind, learning that it is OK to take risks and make mistakes. As teachers and students learn and discover together, education becomes far more engaging. We designed PLTW Launch to offer maximum flexibility and work in a variety of settings and scenarios, which means we have an implementation model that will work for your school or organization.

Be sure to ask your child about any STEM or PLTW activities they experience and watch their faces light up!
