Mentor Program

Program Overview

Established in 1992, the Fayette County Board of Education's Friends Mentoring Program connects students with caring adult volunteers to make a positive, lasting impact. Mentors provide encouragement and support to help students reach their social, emotional, and academic potential.

In this school-based program, volunteers meet one-on-one with a student for up to one hour each week during the school day. This consistent, positive relationship helps students develop essential life skills, improve academic proficiency, and build strong relationship skills.

Mentor Requirements

Commitment: A school-year commitment to ensure consistency for the student
Time: No more than one-hour per week during school hours at the student’s campus
Eligibility: Open to adults over the age of 18

How to Get Started

We invite you to join our team of dedicated volunteers. To begin the application process, please follow these steps:

1. Complete the initial application steps (Steps 1-3 outlined below)
2. Undergo the mandatory annual background screening (a link will be sent to your email once the application steps are finalized)
3. Participate in a 60-minute onboarding orientation (to be arranged following completion of the previous steps)

Requesting a Mentor

Parents or school district employees interested in requesting a mentor for a student should contact the student's school counseling office.

Volunteer Requirements

• Ability to make at least a one-year commitment to the program
• Ability to meet one hour per week at the school site with a student
• Application
• Criminal background check
• Attend a one-hour orientation

Volunteers may specify the age of the child and the school location that they prefer. There are volunteers at all grade levels.
