The English Language Arts Georgia Standards of Excellence provide the framework for instruction at PCES. Students master concepts in reading foundational skills, reading for literature, reading for information, writing, speaking and listening, phonics and language.
Each classroom at PCES implements differentiated reading and language arts instruction to meet the needs of every learner. Varied resources are incorporated to provide the most beneficial learning experience. Some materials used are:
- Storytown Reading Program – This basal series helps teachers provides data-driven instruction in reading and language arts. Students are exposed to reading strategies, robust vocabulary, writing instruction, and multiple genres of text.
- Guided Reading Books – Guided reading books provide text tailored to meet students’ needs. Teachers determine appropriate books, and individualize instruction appropriately. At PCES we have the Sundance and Newbridge guided reading sets, as well as guided reading books from the Storytown series.
- Scholastic Reading Counts! – Reading Counts is an independent reading management program that utilizes software-based reading assessment. The program helps motivate students while providing data to teachers on student progress. All SRC! titles align with Lexile Framework for Reading, making it easy for students to take quizzes on books that are just right for them.
- Georgia Lexile Framework for Reading – Lexile scores rank the reading level of a student and the difficulty of text on a single scale. Many resources located in our media center are labeled with Lexile scores, which helps our students and teachers choose appropriate materials.
