Whitewater Middle Band Director Steven Charity helps students find their music.
Early on as a high school student, Charity had designs on a career as an engineer or an architect. That changed as he dove deeper into music and learned a new way of expression through marching band.
“Music is pretty powerful,” Charity said. “You’re supposed to evoke emotion out of an audience member. You’re telling a story through the music.”
By teaching it, he can share his passion while also helping build character and good qualities in other human beings. He lives for the moment when a student and their instrument start to click with each other. The early sounds often aren’t pleasant, but the work they put in makes it come together.
“This is what I want to do. The journey is so cool,” said Charity. “It’s super rewarding to see a kid make that first sound with their instrument.”
Charity loves what he does because it gives him the opportunity to help develop good people.
“This is the way I want to impact the world. This is going to be my stamp on the world,” said Charity. “I want to be a teacher, and all the awesome things my teachers gave to me I want to give to future students.”
