Across the Board: Blum bridges classes through media center
Oak Grove Elementary media specialist Kenny Blum loves making connections, whether it’s between students and a good book or between classrooms and unique lessons.
There are two key sides to his job: the data-driven side and the people-driven side. On the data side, he does things like analyzing the book collection to see if he has the types of materials people need. On the people side, he gets to help students pick out books and help teachers find resources.
“I get a chance to teach all across the board, and my days are very different,” said Blum.
Every student visits once a week with their class, and they can also come separately during the day.
“I do like that one-on-one time when they come in by themselves because then I can really see what they’re reading and find some of their interests and help spot it.”
He loves when he can help a student see a subject they didn’t like in a different light or help them find a new favorite book.
“I really love to see that light click on for a child.”
Whether it’s through lessons in the library that complement other classes or helping teachers set up sound around the school, he relishes helping out every member of the Oak Grove team.
“I like to be a helper,” he said. “I like collaborating.”
At the root of it all, Blum hopes he helps the Braves appreciate the importance of a good book.
“In the long run, I just want them to be able to enjoy reading because reading is the foundation of so much of our language, and our language is the foundation of so much of what we learn. It’s how we take in much of our education,” he said. “Even if they don’t become a lifelong reader, at least understand the importance of reading.”
