Chess Club Announcement... Chess Club will meet on April 12th & 26th this month!

Inman Chess Club (2018-2019)

Attention 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders! If you already know how to play chess, or if want to learn how to play, you may want to consider joining Inman’s Chess Club. This is an extracurricular club that meets after school on specific Fridays. Chess is a fascinating game of quiet concentration, which allows students to develop the following: focus, problem solving skills, strategic planning, offensive and defensive maneuvering, patience, respect and sportsmanship, as well as many other skills and traits. Club members will learn and practice the game through friendly games and competitions. Meetings will last for approximately one hour, from 2:20 - 3:20 p.m.  Transportation will NOT be provided, so someone must be able to pick you up by 3:30 p.m. each Friday. Meetings are always optional! If you are not able to attend, it’s no problem at all! Just be sure to notify the school or club in writing.

It will be assumed that every chess club member is staying for each meeting unless otherwise noted (by written notice, e-mail, call, etc.). If your child is NOT planning on staying after school on any given Friday, you MUST let us know prior to dismissal on Friday. Any student that is not picked up by 3:40 p.m. will automatically be placed in the After School Program (ASP) as an emergency drop-in, and the parent(s) will be charged the hourly/daily rate.

Good conduct and appropriate behavior are also mandatory at all times during Chess Club meetings, and the Fayette County Student Code of Conduct will be strictly enforced. Any student that demonstrates inappropriate conduct and/or irresponsible behavior will be removed from the Chess Club.

There is no fee for joining the Chess Club! However, donations are always welcomed, and we hope to host at least one open chess tournament during the year to raise money for purchasing game clocks and/or more tournament sets.

If you would like to join the club, please complete the following form, and return it to Mrs. Keller or your homeroom teacher by February 1st. Thanks!

So, to summarize:

  • Attendance each week is totally optional, but your parent must inform the school if you are not attending.
  • You can see which dates we will have Chess Club on the Inman Elementary website
  • Late pick-ups (after 3:40) WILL go to ASP, and you may be charged applicable fees
  • Dates currently planned for Chess Club - February 8th & 22nd, March 8th, 15th, 22nd, April 12th & 26th, and May 10th

The US Chess Federation holds a National Chess Tournament during Mother's Day weekend each year.  This is a wonderful opportunity for the players that have attended and enjoyed competing in some of our local tournaments. This offers a chance for the students to compete against some very experienced players from all over the United States.  The parents must provide transportation, meals, and hotel accomodations for the tournament which is offered at a discounted rate for chess players.  ( $166 per night plus taxes & fees) The link for the tournament information is  If you are interested in finding out more - feel free to send an email my way.  Tournament registration is $50 currently, and the students will need to be members of the US Chess Federation which carries an annual fee, as well.  While this is quite expensive, it is a great trip!
