Arrive Alive shows dangers of impaired driving
The Arrive Alive Tour is helping teens make safer choices with an eye-opening impaired driving simulation.
Using a virtual reality headset inside a stationary vehicle, participants simulate the effects of impaired and distracted driving. Sensors connected to the vehicle’s gas and brake pedals, as well as the steering wheel, allow students to experience the dangers of driving under the influence—without real-life consequences.
After completing the simulation, each student receives a mock citation outlining the potential real-world ramifications of their actions, explained by a facilitator. Additionally, an external LED monitor displays the simulation in real time, allowing other students to observe and learn from the experience.
Whitewater High Health and PE teacher Rashad Muhyee teamed up with the Drug Free Fayette Coalition and the Youth Action Team to bring the tour back to town. The program expanded this year to also include visits to Sandy Creek and Starr’s Mill High.
“With prom season approaching, we want to ensure that our students are fully aware of the dangers of drunk driving, distracted driving, and texting while driving,” said Muhyee.
