Made for Music: Lamb-Schaubroeck serves as springboard for students’ sounds
Dana Lamb-Schaubroeck, Choral Director at Whitewater High, helps her students discover the magic of music.
She keeps a full plate. Her primary responsibility is leading the chorus program, but she also teaches a guitar class, sponsors songwriting club and Tri-M Music Honor Society, and collaborates on musical theatre productions. It is all part of her goal to be where she can and help where she can.
Even when not with her Wildcats, she surrounds herself with music. She has written musicals of her own and done orchestration for others. She’s a published author, and she is working with a church to build their music program. On top of that, she once wrote a song on a dare from a student that made the Billboard charts for 46 weeks.
Music has always been a key part of her life. From the time she was 3 years old and her family realized she could already play along with records on a toy piano, she was encouraged to get involved in anything musical she could get her hands on. There were different instruments and musical theatre and youth symphony and marching band.
That passion extended into her dreams for the future.
“I was off in this wild musical imagination as a kid. I knew from a very early age that I really wanted to be a teacher,” she said. “I have very early childhood memories of setting my dolls up like an orchestra.”
The dolls have been replaced by students, some who may want a career in music and some who may just find it a fun hobby. Whatever their path, Lamb-Schaubroeck helps them be their best. The many, many hours of practice are worth it when a performance comes together.
“When you have those moments where all the stars align and everybody’s prepared, it’s so fun.”
Every student at Whitewater is a chance for her to pay forward the many teachers that poured into her. Each of them helped Lamb-Schaubroeck become the performer and teacher she became.
“Maybe I can be that person (for them). Maybe I can be their springboard.”
