Fayette students post strong math scores on Milestones
Fayette County Public Schools rounded out an excellent showing on the 2023-24 Georgia Milestones assessments with the state’s release of the mathematics results.
On the full year, end-of-course high school Algebra assessment, Fayette students posted a mean score of 557. The state’s mean score was 518. That ranked second highest among school systems with at least 800 students tested. Fayette County had 1,837 students tested.
A total of 69.8% of Fayette students scored “proficient or above,” compared to 44% statewide. “Proficient or above” level means they are considered on track to being college and career ready.
On spring end-of-grade assessments, each of the grades tested excelled in Fayette County. Third graders scored 545 with 65.3% “proficient or above.” Fourth graders scored 551 with 68.5% “proficient or above.” Fifth graders scored 542 with 59% “proficient or above.” Sixth graders scored 542 with 58% “proficient or above.” Seventh graders scored 555 with 65.1% “proficient or above.” Eighth graders scored 561 with 73.5% “proficient or above.”
Math results are being released now because the assessments were updated to align with the new K-12 Mathematics Standards first implemented during the 2023-24 school year. Results for English Language Arts, science, and social studies were released in July.
“Reviewing these results, I am extremely proud of Georgia students and our mathematics teachers and leaders throughout the state, along with all those who contributed to the review and redesign of Georgia’s K-12 mathematics standards,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “Thousands of Georgians participated in the process of creating the new standards – they are truly Georgia-owned and Georgia-grown, and these scores are an early indicator of success for that work.”
