Whitewater High counselor Kelly Hubbard enables students to succeed after graduation.
Hubbard was already studying psychology in college when she found her future path. For her practicum, she worked with a school counselor, and it all clicked.
“I knew that I wanted to work in that field somehow, helping people help themselves, giving them knowledge and skills and tools to really make their lives more successful and thrive,” said Hubbard. “It was the literal sort of ‘aha moment’ where people find what they have been looking for, what they maybe didn’t even know existed.”
When she first came to the county, she was a counselor at Robert J. Burch Elementary for 10 years. Now in her 8th year at Whitewater High, she loves being able to work with a student for four years, helping them grow from a freshman into a young adult ready to jump out into the real world.
“We really are able to develop knowledge of them as a student, as a person, and then it helps us guide them into their next pathway, wherever they go after high school graduation.”
It takes a team working together to prepare the Wildcats to be their best, and Hubbard takes pride in being part of a school counseling program that makes a difference in Whitewater’s successes.
“I definitely believe in a community working together to set a student up for success as an adult,” she said. “it spurs you on to not only improve your services because you want to be better, but you want the community, the entire school, to be better.”
