Local stars shine at state track and field
Local teams were scattered around the state at three locations but many found their way to a familiar spot atop the winner’s podium at the GHSA Track & Field State Championships.
There were big wins on the boys side with Starr’s Mill winning the 4A team championship and Sandy Creek claiming the 3A crown. It was history for both, with the Panthers winning their first state title and the Patriots completing a three-peat.
Local boys and girls stars also claimed 1st place in several events.
In Class 4A, Starr’s Mill’s Jared Moore won gold in both the discus and shot put.
In Class 3A, Sandy Creek’s Dalen Penson won gold in both the triple jump and the 110 meter hurdles. Blake Davis won gold in the high jump, and Jude Adderley won gold in the 300 meter hurdles.
Fayette County High’s team of Trennedy Whatley, Allen Israel Sulton IV, Stylianos Kutob, and Zakhari Rivers won gold in the 4x400 meter relay. Marzani Sconyers won gold in the girls 100 meter hurdles.
Whitewater’s quartet of Zahriya Sullivan, Jayla Fouse, Sabrina McGie, and Jayda Smith won gold in the girls 4x400 meter relay.
There were a host of other top 5 finishes among all of the county teams.
In Class 3A, Sandy Creek led the way with the boys winning gold and the girls placing 7th.
On the boys side, Blake Davis placed 2nd in the triple jump and 4th in the long jump. Jude Adderley placed 4th in the 110 meter hurdles. Jayden Juniors placed 5th in the 300 meter hurdles. Tre Olive placed 5th in the 100 meter dash. The Patriots placed 2nd in the 4x100 meter relay, 3rd in the 4x200 meter, and 4th in the 4x800.
On the girls side, Noelle Boyd finished 2nd in the 300 meter hurdles. McKenzie Paul placed 2nd in the triple jump, and Khristian Bell placed 5th. Ariyana Johnson placed 3rd in discus.
The Fayette County boys placed 6th, and the girls placed 10th.
On the boys side, Trennedy Whatley finished 2nd in the 400 meter dash, with Stylianos Kutob in 3rd. Allen Israel Sulton IV placed 4th in the 800 meter run. The Tigers finished 2nd in the 4x800 meter run.
On the girls side, the Tigers finished 2nd in the 4x200 meter relay and 4th in the 4x100 meter relay.
The Whitewater boys placed 20th, and the girls placed 12th.
On the boys side, Courtland Sabino placed 5th in the 110 meter hurdles.
On the girls side, Jayda Smith placed 4th in the 400 meter dash, 5th in the 200 meter dash, and 6th in the long jump. Jayla Fouse placed 5th in the 800 meter run.
In Class 4A, the Starr’s Mill boys won 1st place, and the girls placed 6th.
On the boys side, Bankson Roach placed 5th in the 1600 meter run, and Nate Pacetti placed 5th in the 3200 meter run. The Panthers finished 2nd in the 4x800 meter relay.
On the girls side, Emma Arnold placed 3rd in the 300 meter hurdles, and Kali McQuade placed 3rd in the 800 meter run. Mia Brown placed 4th in the 200 meter dash and 5th in the 400 meter dash. Panther teams finished 2nd in the 4x400 meter relay and 3rd in the 4x100 meter relay.
In Class 5A, the McIntosh boys placed 10th, and the girls placed 42nd.
On the boys side, Mamadou Boube finished 2nd in the 300 meter hurdles. The team of Boube, David Kienast, Chayse Wright, and Chase Cromartie finished 2nd in the 4x200 meter relay. The quartet of Kienast, Wright, Cromartie, and Tavaris Fair placed 5th in the 4x100 meter relay.
