Busy Bee: Terry Wilson makes job easier for teachers
The Teacher Resource Center is always buzzing with activity for teacher resource specialist Terry Wilson.
Whatever a teacher might need for instructional materials, she is ready to help.
“It is my job to make their job easier,” said Wilson. “I try to fulfill that promise every day.”
Housed at the LaFayette Education Center, the old BeeHive is a massive resource for the educators of Fayette County Public Schools. They can create pretty much anything, whether it is something like posters, handouts, or bulletin boards. Teachers can choose to create in person, or they can email over their request and receive the finished product through the school system mail.
“They don’t even have to take time out of their busy schedule to come up here and pick it up.”
The Teacher Resource Center is open to educators all year, even over summer break. While teachers may not need them as much, there are plenty of school requests like clinic pads, maps, and other administrative items to keep busy.
Wilson has done it for 20 years, and she loves the variety each day’s requests offer.
“It’s been challenging, it’s been enjoyable. It certainly feeds my creative juices,” she said. “I’ve loved every minute. I have never worked a day in the 20 years that I’ve been here.”
Nearly a lifelong resident of Fayette County, she loves to give back to the area that helped raise her. She went to elementary school in what is now the building where she works.
“I can still walk down the hall of D building and know where my old locker was,” she said. “I can hear and feel what it was like back then.”
She is a key piece of the Fayette County High School Distinguished Alumni and Sports Hall of Fame. Since the second year of its existence, she has helped to identify worthy Distinguished Alumni from FCHS. They have been able to honor a wide array of former Tigers who made an impact, either locally or elsewhere, including soldiers, writers, and doctors. The goal is to both acknowledge those special alums while also inspiring current students to see the great things they can achieve as Tigers.
“I look at Fayette County now, and I’m so proud of how far we have come. It was a great place to grow up,” she said. “I had an incredible village and they’re still part of me.”
Whether in prior positions, at the Teacher Resource Center, volunteering at her church, or out in every day life, she is always eager to lend a hand.
“My why is service,” said Wilson. “It makes me happy to help other people.”
