FCHS alum Miller wins title, throws first pitch
It’s been a big year for Fayette County High alum Rikkelle Miller. Fresh off a pro softball championship, Miller threw out the ceremonial first pitch for a game between her alma mater and Sandy Creek.
A decorated star for the Tigers, Miller has continued racking up the softball accolades. The 2019 conference rookie of the year at Grambling, Miller transferred to King University and kept adding trophies to the mantle, including 2022 All-American honors. Over the summer, she won a Women’s Professional Fastpitch (WPF) championship with the Texas Smoke.
The WPF title was a sweet culmination of a journey. Last year, Miller was featured on the ESPN series Tryouts. Each episode features athletes trying out for teams in different sports, and Miller was among those trying out for the Texas Smoke. While she did not make the team in 2023, they signed her for this season. Now, there is a championship trophy she can proudly hoist.
Exposure to the game at a high level and surrounded by amazing athletes inspired Miller to expand her reach. Now she has added assistant coach at Bluefield State University to her resume.
“Playing on the highest level and standing next to high-caliber athletes makes me want to just grow the game even more,” said Miller. “Winning lets others know that hope is real. ‘Work always works.’”
