Dolphins craft sentences

North Fayette Elementary students studied sentences, then got busy building their own.

Dr. Tanisha Mobley's 3rd grade class has been learning about the different types of sentences: Declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. They participated in a collaborative group activity that required them to read and sort different sentences into groups.

Four of the sentences required them to add the correct punctuation mark at the end before sorting them into groups. After students sorted the different types, each group was responsible for writing three of their own sentences based on a specified type. For instance, one group was responsible for writing three declarative sentences, while another group had to write three exclamatory sentences.

One student commented, "It was really fun because I got to learn a lot more about sentence types and work with my classmates. One thing I learned is that an imperative sentence can end with either a period or an exclamation mark, and it gives a command or makes a request."

Dr. Mobley hopes that students will transfer this learning by using different types of sentences in their writing across the curriculum.
