SCHS Students Advance to Nationals in the History Day Competition

Sandy Creek students did an outstanding job at the National History Day state-level competition at LaGrange College on Saturday, April 13.

Congratulations to the following students for their first or second place finish. These students will compete in the national finals of the National History Day Competition on June 10, in College Park, Maryland:

  • First place Senior Group Documentary: Triumph and Tragedy of the Vietnam Refugees, Brian Nguyen, Jason Davis, Stokely Dennis, and Ethan Toone.
  • First place Senior Individual Website: Banning of DDT: Rachel Carson’s Triumph, Jimena Molina.
  • Second place Senior Group Exhibit: "Detangling the Roots of African American Hair," Zaria Johnson and Ashley Cook.

The Senior Group Documentary on the Vietnam War also won the Edward R. Jones Award for military history, and the boys will receive a cash prize.

Two projects received Honorable Mention at the state competition:

  • Senior Individual Documentary, Raising the Stakes: The Salem Witch Trials, Lunden Birago.
  • Senior Group Performance: "Women in History: Triumph and Tragedy," Kennedy Hill, Josephine Martins, Sarah Kaba, Semyra Edu and Solange Aniekwu.
