SCHS Math Team Dominates Morehouse Math Competition
Seventeen Sandy Creek High School Math Team members had the opportunity to participate in the Eighth Annual Math Competition Bootcamp at Morehouse on Saturday, August 24. Sandy Creek swept the top three places in the 11th and 12th-grade competitions. Daniel Antoine won first place in the 11th-grade competition, with Aleks Stec and Lily Mai placing 2nd and 3rd. Brandon Worrell won first place in the 12th-grade competition, with Noah Bridgeman and Zuzu Vidourek placing 2nd and 3rd.
Those placing in 9th grade were Vince Phan (1st) and Aaron Bryant (3rd). Those placing in 10th were Sydney Schulten (1st) and Caleb Adams (3rd). In addition, senior Spencer Hodge was awarded the best overall award. This award, the Phaidra Buchanan Award, was renamed to honor the Sandy Creek 2017 graduate for being a four-time winner of the overall award. Aleks Stec and Brandon Worrell were also able to take part in a panel discussion led by Buchanan about the applications of math. Monique Williams (FRMS teacher) and Haley Yerby (FRMS 8th grader) were also a part of the panel. Brooke Loyd, Abby Paver, Jared Newsome, Lucas Buffkin, Kieran Marland, and Jason Davis rounded out the team that represented Sandy Creek so well.
Teams from Flat Rock and North Fayette also attended. FRMS swept the awards in the 7th and 8th-grade divisions, and students placed 1st and 2nd in 6th grade. North Fayette students placed 1st and 2nd in the 5th-grade division.
