The great work being done by the Public Works Club at Open Campus has not gone unnoticed. The club was recently honored with a 2024 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties.
The Public Works Club is open to students at Open Campus who are interested in learning about career opportunities outside of those that require a college degree. It gives students a chance to learn about a variety of topics in public works, including operating large construction equipment and how it relates to video games, underground utilities, digital mapping with drone technology, surveying, equipment, large truck repair, how drinking water is purified and transported, customer service, and emergency services.
The club meets twice a month during the school year with each meeting focused on a specific topic dealing with different career opportunities. The club also goes on a field trip once a semester, with past groups visiting the county public works facility, the county elections building, and the new animal shelter.
“We hope this exposure can turn into career opportunities for our young people,” said teacher Kenneth James. “The club can also serve as a pipeline for Fayette County Public Works to train and recruit young people into the industry.”
