Chiefs 3rd at international drone competition
McIntosh Aeronautics soars with the best. The Chiefs placed third overall at UAS4STEM, an international drone competition sponsored by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, Skydio drones, and the NAVY.
The McIntosh Aeronautics team designed, built, and programmed a drone from scratch, successfully completing multiple tasks, including the autonomous pickup and delivery of three objects within a 30-minute timeframe. Their remarkable achievement followed rigorous rounds of testing and a victory in the southeast region. The fierce competition culminated in the top 12 teams from each of their regional qualifiers going head-to-head at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI.
The on-site team was comprised of commander Arinze Ugbajah, chief engineer Raaga Sundar, pilot Dhanush Mikkilineni, head programmer Siah Yoon, mission planner Tanish Gupta, and safety officer Aran Anuraj. Team members Aadi Vaidya and Keira Lee also offered invaluable contributions throughout the year.
The team is led by teacher Seth Bishop and sponsored by Airbus.
UAS4STEM is designed for students to learn, practice, and demonstrate professional un-crewed aircraft system (UAS) knowledge, mission planning, flight skills, data collection, analysis, and safety practices in a competitive team-oriented environment. It is a drone competition for everyone, with both beginner and advanced categories. It has grown, including international teams this year.
