Household items become machines at Starr’s Mill
Household items found new life as simple machines thanks to the innovative thinking of Starr’s Mill High engineering students.
Rob Bell’s Foundations of Engineering and Technology classes were challenged to design a device capable of hurling an 8-ounce bean bag as far as possible. Once complete, they tested the device and recorded launch data, analyzed the data, then redesigned and implemented product improvements. After the second trial, students analyzed the data under the lenses of precision and accuracy as a foundation for understanding quality control.
For Bell, the goal is teaching students the engineering design process is always evolving.
“The main takeaway is that design is an iterative process that involves testing, analysis, redesign, and more testing to ensure consumers receive a product that meets all design criteria.”
