PTC Elem. studies animal adaptations
Peachtree City Elementary students used different tools to learn about animal adaptations in birds.
Marilyn Harsey’s 3rd grade class started by studying pictures of birds with different beaks. After a discussion on why they might be different, students split into groups where they used tools to act as beaks. They used items like tweezers, water droppers, scissors, chopsticks, and spoons to pick up different simulated ”food sources" like worms, nectar, fish, meat, and tree grubs.
After collecting all their data, they created an informational writing about why birds have different adaptations based on their environment and available food sources.
“I really hope my students were able to understand animal adaptations from a new perspective,” said Harsey. “I also really hope my students can take away the importance of making predictions and creating data that is easy to understand.”
