S’mores cook up lesson on heat at Minter Elem.
Solar-powered ovens helped Sara Harp Minter Elementary 3rd graders cook up s’mores and a better understanding of heat energy.
To cap off their heat unit in science, handmade, sun-baked s’mores were on the menu. Classes had been learning about the effects of sunlight on various objects and were tasked with designing a device that would increase the effects of sunlight to melt their chocolate. The students were provided a flat pie box, along with tin foil and black paper. They had to decide how to use the supplies in order for their s'more to bake.
“Our hope is that our students learned about renewable energy from the sun for heating and cooking as they built their solar ovens,” said teacher Eileen Corley. “They were able to explore the concepts of insulation, reflection, absorption, and conduction.”
