Students Head to State Science Competition After Dominating Regional Tournament; Two Fayette Students will Represent Georgia at the International Science Fair

Mostly Fayette County students will represent the Griffin RESA region at the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair after securing the majority of first place victories in both the high school and middle school divisions of the 2017 Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair.Two Fayette Students Will Represent Georgia at the International Science Fair

 

Fayette County students racked up over 75 percent of the first place wins in the high school division and over 50 percent of the first place awards in the middle school division. All first place winners are now headed to the state competition in Athens, Georgia March 30-April 1.

 

Megan Uszynski and Robbie VanZyl, both from McIntosh High, had the two top projects in the high school division, and will represent Georgia at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, California May 14-19. This marks the second consecutive year that two students from McIntosh High have had the best overall projects at the regional competition. This also makes the fourth consecutive year two students from Fayette’s high schools have represented Georgia at the international fair.

 

High school first place winners advancing to the 2017 state competition are (Fayette County High) Rachel Gomes and Jubin Thomas; (McIntosh High) Dhanush Avva, Jennifer Deng, Colby Heist, ShiHo Kim, Robert Palla, Evan Sanchez, Utkarsh Singh, Tobi Tega, Oliver Thornhill, Sam Triplett, Megan Uszynski, Caitlin VanZyl, Jacqui VanZyl, Robbie VanZyl, and Caroline Zhang; (Sandy Creek High) Gabriel Bartolomei, Zachary Bonser, Miles Bouknight, and Jalen Leverett; (Starr’s Mill High) Laura Anderson, Sarah Goins, Matthew Hyle, Qiru Lin, Maxwell Meyhofer, Sydney Turnier, Yukmi Ueda, and Margaret Xiao; (Whitewater High) Anna Agi, Edward Huang, Brittany Rice, Jolie Ryff, and Townshend White.

 

Middle school first place winners advancing to the 2017 state tournament are (Bennett’s Mill Middle) Aleksander Stec; (J.C. Booth Middle) Connor Bushmire, Eric Habicht, Irene Kwon, Joseph Metzler, and Braxton Roop; (Whitewater Middle) Sydney Brown and Alina Sullivan.

 

The Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair is a competition for middle and high schools in the school systems of Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding, and Upson counties.
