Students Head to State Science Competition After Dominating Regional Tournament Three Fayette Students Are Representing Georgia at the International Science Fair
Mostly Fayette County students will represent the Griffin RESA region at the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair after securing the majority of first place victories in both the high school and middle school divisions of the 2018 Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
Fayette County students racked up over 68 percent of the first place wins in the high school division and over 80 percent of the first place awards in the middle school division. All first place winners are now headed to the state competition in Athens, Georgia March 22-24.
Sam Triplet, and Caitlin van Zyl and Jacqueline van Zyl, all from McIntosh High, had the two top projects in the high school division, and will represent Georgia at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania May 13-18. This marks the third consecutive year that students from McIntosh High have had the best overall projects at the regional competition. This also makes the fifth consecutive year students from Fayette’s high schools have represented Georgia at the international fair.
High school first place winners advancing to the 2018 state competition are (Fayette County High) Kaylin Belwood; (McIntosh High) Neda Amini, Ben Anderson, Seung-a Baek, Raaga Brahmdevi, Racheal Cox, Andrew Graffeo, Priyam Kadakia, Arsh Khanwani, Rishab Kolachina, Nick Lankau, Elizabeth Larson, Sarah Park, Riya Ratkalkar, Adrien Richez, Irene Song, Zack Stone, Sam Triplett, Caitlin van Zyl, Jacqueline van Zyl, Caroline Zhang; (Starr’s Mill High) Dana Gould, Marissa Heinsz, Dean Rowell; (Whitewater High) Austin Duncan, Edward Huang, Jolie Ryff, and Townsend White.
Middle school first place winners advancing to the 2018 state tournament are (J.C. Booth Middle) Celene Bennett, Brandon Cheri, Mac Danelly, Nick Farinacci, Drew Harwell, Matthew Johnfore, Alexa Markely, Carly Nixon, Aadhav Sundar, Marc van Zyl; (Whitewater Middle) Jacob Morrison, Olivia Ray, Brandon Stephenson, Emily Wagner, and Luke Walls.
The Griffin RESA Regional Science and Engineering Fair is a competition for middle and high schools in the school systems of Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding, and Upson counties.
