Marc Van Zyl took first place at the middle school level for his invention, Automatic Magnivision, a hands-free magnifying headset that raises and lowers using simple head gestures. In addition, Kathleen Lanman, a STEM science teacher at J.C. Booth Middle, received the top teacher award for middle school.

This marks the second consecutive year that J.C. Booth Middle has had a student advance to the national invention competition, as well as the second year that Lanman has received the top teacher award.

Georgia Tech’s InVenture Challenge is a celebration of student achievement in invention and entrepreneurship that is modeled after the university’s InVenture Prize competition for undergraduates. Schools throughout the state send their best projects for the state finals.

Van Zyl will compete at the National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo that will take place at the Henry Ford Museum of Innovation in Dearborn, Michigan on May 31-June 2.
