Mentors Honored at Annual Appreciation Breakfast
Over 40 adult and teen mentors were honored at the 10th annual Friends Mentoring Appreciation Breakfast hosted at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce.
Members of the Fayette County Public School System’s Friends Mentoring Program are volunteers who serve as mentors to students across the county establishing positive and long-term relationships.
During the breakfast, program manager Jane Gough thanked and honored mentors for their hard work and dedication throughout the school year.
Special recognitions were given to four mentors for their commitment and years of service with the mentor program; Joan Jachino has been a part of the program for 15 years, Donna Bailey (13 years), Lynn Kearbey (11 years), and Len Gough (10 years).
Cynthia Turner, a DeKalb County school social worker and mother of a former mentee, was the keynote speaker at the breakfast where she discussed the positive impact the program had on her son Ross and the importance of being a mentor.
“This program changed his life forever,” Turner says, sharing her son’s experience of being in the mentor program from elementary through high school.
Through a video message, Ross expressed his appreciation for the mentor program, “Thank you for believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself and for always being someone I can count on.”
Friends Mentoring is an opportunity for volunteers to make a positive impact on the life of a child. Mentors meet weekly one-on-one with their students in a school based setting. The program focuses on assisting children in developing relationship skills, building positive life skills, and improving academic proficiencies.
