Three Fayette County high school athletic programs have finished in the top 10 for the Georgia Athletic Directors Association Regions Bank Directors Cup award.
The purpose of the Regions Bank Directors Cup is to recognize athletic departments in all Georgia High School Association classifications that have excelled and shown superior performance. The award is presented to the state’s top boys program, top girls program, and top overall program in each classification based on a high school’s performance in 25 different sports.
Finishing in first place and winning the overall award for Georgia in classification 5-A is Starr’s Mill High. The school also has the top boys and girls programs in the state, with both finishing in first place. This marks the third time in four years that the overall athletic program at Starr’s Mill has taken first place in the Directors Cup competition.
McIntosh High finished fourth overall in the state in classification 5-A, and the boys program took fourth place as well. The girls program placed second.
Whitewater High rounds out the top 10 list with a seventh place overall state finish in classification 5-A. Their boys program took 17th place and the girls program finished in sixth place.
McIntosh and Whitewater High schools have finished in the top five overall Directors Cup rankings for classification 5-A since 2012. Whitewater High has been included in the top 10 rankings since 2016.
The 25 different sports for which schools earn points for the Directors Cup include: football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, girls fast pitch and slow pitch softball, boys and girls basketball, competition cheerleading, wrestling, riflery, gymnastics, boys and girls swimming, boy and girls track and field, boys and girls golf, baseball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys and girls tennis.
